Thank you veterans! Regardless of how fast our lives move we need to take time to appreciate all the sacrifices of our veterans. We should do this regularly, and fortunately there is also a special day set aside just for this - Veteran’s Day. This year it is celebrated on November 11.
In addition to the several Veteran’s Day celebrations, there is one place in Richmond which is a constant reminder to me of the sacrifices of our veterans-
The Carillon in Byrd Park. The Carillon is a 240- foot Georgian 56-bell tower and a large scale musical instrument, one of a class of instruments which are the largest in the world. The bells are played by a baton keyboard, manipulated by the fists and feet of a person. It was built in the mid 1920’s. The purpose of the tower and bells is a memorial to Virginians who died fighting in World War I.
Several Veteran’s Day celebrations will also occur to remember the veterans who served our great country. Veteran’s Day events coincide with the signing of the WWI Armistice on November 11, 1918. One of Richmond’s major celebrations will be at the
Virginia War Memorial on November 11 from 10:00 AM- 11:00 AM. Governor Terry McAuliffe is the invited speaker. This year the 100th Anniversary of WWI will also be commemorated. The ceremony will conclude with the playing of Taps.
If you want to really go big, then Washington, D.C. is where you want to be. Each of the war memorials will have a wreath laying ceremony along with other reminders of the many sacrifices by veterans. Some events will have guest speakers as well.
Here at
Extra Attic we celebrate veterans and all their sacrifices in support of our freedoms.Thank you veterans! USA! USA! USA! USA!
